Scaling and Root Planing
Overview
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease (periodontitis) and prevent it from progressing. Over time, plaque and tartar can build up below the gum line, causing inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss. This treatment removes those deposits and smooths the tooth roots, helping gums reattach to teeth and restoring oral health.
What to Expect
During the procedure, your hygienist or dentist will carefully clean below the gum line using specialized instruments, sometimes including ultrasonic scalers for gentle and efficient removal of deposits. The roots of the teeth are then smoothed to make it harder for bacteria to accumulate. Depending on the severity of the gum disease, the procedure may be done in one or more visits, and local anesthetic is used to ensure comfort throughout.
It’s important to understand the difference between a regular cleaning (prophylaxis) and scaling and root planing. A prophy is designed for patients with healthy gums and focuses on removing plaque and tartar above the gum line. If periodontal disease exists, a prophy alone is not enough because it cannot reach the bacteria and tartar below the gum line. SRP is required to properly treat the disease and prevent further damage.
Aftercare
You may experience mild tenderness, swelling, or sensitivity for a few days following treatment. Rinsing with a warm saltwater solution and sticking to a soft-food diet can help ease discomfort. Maintain diligent oral hygiene at home, brushing and flossing carefully, and follow any specific instructions provided by your dentist. Most patients require a follow-up visit to check healing and monitor gum health.
Why It Matters
If gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to tooth mobility, bone loss, and even tooth loss. Scaling and root planing stops the progression of disease, helps restore gum health, and protects your smile for the long term.
