Overview

Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed to protect your overall oral health. This can happen when a tooth is badly decayed, broken beyond repair, infected, or causing crowding. While we always prioritize saving your natural teeth when possible, extractions are occasionally the best option to relieve pain, prevent infection, or prepare for future treatment such as implants or orthodontics.

What to Expect

Before the extraction, the area is numbed thoroughly so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Depending on the tooth’s position and condition, your dentist may use gentle pressure or perform a minor surgical extraction if the tooth is not fully visible. You’ll feel pressure but should not feel pain. Once the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned and may be closed with a small stitch if needed. A piece of gauze is placed to help stop bleeding and form a clot.

Aftercare

Keep gentle pressure on the gauze for about 30–45 minutes after your visit to allow the clot to form. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours, as these actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing. Mild swelling and soreness are normal for the first few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and a soft-food diet. Brush and floss carefully, avoiding the extraction site until it begins to heal. If swelling, bleeding, or pain worsens after a few days, contact the office for follow-up care.

Why It Matters

Leaving a severely damaged or infected tooth in place can lead to serious complications, including bone loss and the spread of infection. Removing the problem tooth helps restore comfort, protect surrounding teeth, and create a healthier foundation for any future dental work.
