Overview

Children’s dentistry focuses on the unique oral health needs of infants, children, and teens. Early dental visits help establish good habits, prevent cavities, and monitor proper tooth and jaw development. We create a welcoming, gentle environment where kids feel comfortable and learn that dental visits can be positive experiences. Our team is experienced in working with young patients and takes extra time to explain procedures in kid-friendly language. Without regular dental care, children are at higher risk for cavities, tooth pain, difficulty eating, and speech development issues. Early intervention can prevent more serious problems and expensive treatments later.

What to Expect

We recommend a child’s first dental visit by age one or within six months of their first tooth erupting. During the appointment, we’ll gently examine your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw development. We’ll demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques and discuss nutrition, fluoride, and habits like thumb-sucking or pacifier use.

Professional cleanings for children are adapted to their comfort level and may be shorter than adult appointments. We use child-sized instruments and take breaks as needed. Fluoride treatments help strengthen developing tooth enamel, and dental sealants can be applied to protect permanent molars from cavities. X-rays may be taken as your child grows to monitor tooth development and check for issues not visible during examination.

Aftercare

Help your child brush twice daily with a soft-bristled, child-sized toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste (pea-sized amount for ages 3+). Supervise brushing until age 7-8 to ensure thorough cleaning. Floss between teeth that touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and encourage water between meals. Schedule dental checkups every six months to maintain healthy teeth and catch any problems early.

Why It Matters

Primary (baby) teeth are important for chewing, speaking clearly, and holding space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and affect the development of adult teeth. Establishing a dental home early helps children feel comfortable with dental care and sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Children who visit the dentist regularly are less likely to develop dental anxiety and more likely to maintain good oral health into adulthood.
