Dental Exam and Cleanings
Overview
Routine dental cleanings are one of the most important ways to protect your oral health. Even with good brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar can build up in areas that are hard to reach. Professional cleanings remove those deposits and help prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Regular exams also allow us to catch small issues before they turn into bigger problems.
Without regular cleanings, plaque can harden and irritate the gums, eventually leading to decay, bone loss, and tooth loss if left untreated.
What to Expect
During your visit, we’ll start with a gentle examination of your teeth and gums. Digital X-rays may be taken to check areas not visible to the eye. Your hygienist will then use specialized instruments, including an ultrasonic scaler (sometimes called a Cavitron or Piezo), to remove plaque and tartar efficiently and comfortably. These devices use gentle vibrations and a fine mist of water to break up deposits without putting pressure on your teeth or gums. After scaling, your teeth will be polished and flossed to leave them smooth and refreshed. The dentist will review your X-rays, perform a final check, and discuss any recommendations for your care.
Aftercare
Your mouth may feel extra clean and possibly a little sensitive for a short time after your cleaning. You can eat and drink right away unless fluoride treatment was applied, in which case wait about 30 minutes. Keep brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss daily to maintain results. For most patients, we recommend professional cleanings every six months to keep your smile healthy and bright.
