Dental Bridges
Overview
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth, helping restore your smile, chewing function, and overall oral health. Bridges literally “bridge” the gap between teeth using crowns on the neighboring healthy teeth (abutments) and a false tooth (pontic) in between. Replacing missing teeth prevents shifting of adjacent teeth, bite problems, and jaw strain.
What to Expect
Placement of a dental bridge typically requires two visits. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared and impressions are taken to fabricate the bridge in a dental lab. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and maintain appearance. On the second visit, the permanent bridge is fitted, adjusted, and cemented in place.
Bridges can be made from different materials depending on your needs:
- Porcelain or ceramic: Natural-looking and ideal for front teeth.
- Porcelain fused to metal (PFM): Strong with a natural appearance.
- Zirconia: Extremely durable and ideal for back teeth.
Aftercare
Maintain excellent oral hygiene to protect the supporting teeth and prevent decay. Brush twice daily and floss carefully, using a floss threader or water flosser to clean under the bridge. Avoid chewing very hard or sticky foods that could damage the restoration. Regular dental check-ups are essential to monitor the health of the bridge and surrounding teeth.
Why It Matters
Missing teeth can cause surrounding teeth to shift, bite misalignment, and jaw problems over time. A bridge restores function, maintains your smile, and protects the health of your remaining teeth. Modern materials allow bridges to be durable, functional, and natural-looking.
