Dental Crowns
Overview
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are commonly used to protect teeth after large fillings, root canals, or fractures, and can also improve cosmetic appearance.
What to Expect
During your visit, your dentist will prepare the tooth by gently shaping it to fit the crown. Some crown materials still require two visits because they must be fabricated in a dental lab. That’s perfectly normal, and your tooth will be protected with a temporary crown in the meantime.
At Nori Dental Studio, we also offer CEREC same-day crowns for certain materials. This advanced technology allows us to scan, design, and mill your crown right in the office, so you can leave with a permanent restoration in a single visit. Your dentist will help determine whether same-day crowns are a good option based on the tooth location, material choice, and specific needs.
Crowns can be made from several materials depending on your needs:
Porcelain/Ceramic: Natural-looking, ideal for front teeth, some materials can be done same day.
Porcelain fused to metal (PFM): Durable with a natural appearance, lab-fabricated.
Zirconia: Extremely strong, suitable for back teeth and bridges, usually lab-fabricated.
Gold or metal alloys: Very durable but less cosmetic, lab-fabricated.
Aftercare
Avoid chewing on hard foods for the first 24 hours after placement to let the crown fully settle. Maintain regular brushing and flossing, taking care around the crown margins to prevent decay. Routine dental visits are important to monitor the crown and surrounding teeth.
